As the winter is slowly approaching, it is time to reflect, to plan and to repair your garden. Although there are a number of things that can be done, I will mention the most important ones. Firstly, it is important to bear in mind that besides taking care of your flowers, plants, vegetables etc. you also need to thoroughly protect your garden shed from the winter.

Two essential things to do in the month of October are treating the wood from your shed so that it is protected from the humidity of the winter, preventing the wood from being damaged. Also, make sure that you loosen the joints that hold your garden shed together a little bit. The reason why this is so important is because the humidity of the winter may cause the wood to swell. If you loosen up the joints, the wood will have more room to swell, preventing your garden shed from being damaged.

Even though this is a self-evident thing it is still important to be mentioned; please take care of your plants. Carefully select the plants that need to be taken into the green house (don’t forget to feed your indoor plants occasionally!) and which plants just need to be covered. If you decide to plant some winter plants it is important to choose compact plants (not flowering) as this will increase a longer flower display. Other flowers you may wish to consider planting for the winter are violas, winter pansies (for mild winter spells), ornamental kale and forget-me-nots. Forget-me-nots are lovely, but please do not grow them in the same place every year because this may increase the risk of diseases.

The winter is a great season to start planning for the next season, so you may want to consider ordering seed catalogues and to think about what you are going to be growing in the spring.

Decking is a type of outdoor structure which we just adore in the UK. This floor like sophisticated structure is typically made from wood or composite and installed in the garden. While wood or composite material has its own strong points and weak points, the outcome is the same. By using smart design, garden decking can make your home look bigger and make the living space more spacious by extending it to the garden.

3 Tips For Making Your Home Look Bigger Using Garden Decking:

Fit the decking at the correct level – To create a visible illusion of bigger space, fit the garden decking on the same level as the living room flooring level. This useful design tip is often overlooked.

Choose same material flooring and decking – Whether you are fitting wood or composite decking, each can be painted to reflect the same shade of flooring in the rest of the home. This is easiest to achieve when wooden floors are fitted using staining liquids, however decking can be painted in many shades to match various type of floors. Once the shades match, use a glass door to divide between the living room and the garden.

Oil the deck often – One of the major differences between wood and composite decking is oiling. Composite does not require oiling, while wood will require oiling to maintain the theme of bigger space. Wood which is placed in the garden is exposed to the elements and with time will change its colour. Frequent oiling of twice a year (before spring time and late autumn) will help ensure that the shade remains unchanged.

A beautiful lawn doesn’t get that way by itself. A green, weed free lawn is the ultimate goal of most gardeners. No one wants to spend all their free time working on their lawn to accomplish this and with a little planning and simplifying you won’t have to.

Great Looking Summer Lawns

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the fruits of your labour. If you regularly mowed, fertilized and watered your lawn during the spring months you will find you have a beautiful lawn with healthy grass. When mowing, look for and make note of any spots that will need re-seeding or need to be treated for disease. Mow grass regularly and cut a little at a time (no more than one third its height), instead of waiting until the grass is overgrown. Weed and feed treatments during the season will give your lawn a boost and keep it looking great throughout the summer. Water in the summer if there is little rainfall, this will prevent the grass from going dormant and browning. It is recommended that you water in the morning or evening and avoid the heat of the midday because it can burn the grass. For areas with high humidity, water in the morning because evening watering can cause mold to grow.

Winter Lawn Care

During the winter, you will need to continue to look after your lawn. Keep debris off it and trim plant growth near the edges. To remove worm casting you can use a stiff broom. Aerating the ground by poking holes at regular intervals throughout will stimulate growth in the spring. Fill holes with sand for the best results. During the Winter months, you and your lawn can rest. Part of looking after your lawn will include making sure that all lawn care equipment works properly when you are ready to use it in the spring and summer months. Wintertime is a great time to clean, do repairs, treat any rust on tools and do basic maintenance on lawn mowers, lawn edgers and other equipment.

Seasonal Lawn Care

Work with the seasons, the weather and the natural growing cycles of the grass to make the most of your time that you spend on your lawn. Be prepared for seasonal challenges like rain, falling leaves and snow. Seasons can bring extreme weather which can result in flooded lawns, excessive debris and frozen lawns. It is recommended that you stay off the grass when very wet and allow the condition to pass before resuming lawn care or using for recreation.

Keeping Lawn Care Simple

When caring for your lawn, you will want to keep it simple. Find efficient tools and products. Set up a schedule so that the lawn doesn’t become overgrown, dormant or diseased. No one will rush to work on a area full of weeds and overgrown grass, so a regularly weeded and cut lawn is more likely to get the attention that it needs to keep things under control. Have garden furniture and play equipment that is easy to move or positioned so that it is easy to cut around. Having a regular fertilizing schedule will assure that the grass consistently looks green.

Care For Older Lawns

The ground can become depleted of nutrients and beneficial soil elements as the grass takes what it needs from the soil every growing season. Adding a topsoil treatment and fertilizers will replenish the soil and the results will be a lush green lawn. Older lawns may have a layer of thatch that will need to be removed.

What tips and advice would you give for looking after your lawn?
